Part 4: Songs that Defined 2019

Good evening, it’s your girl back at it again with shubbing various K-pop songs down WordPress browsers’ throats. Forgive me if my descriptions of the songs don’t do them justice. I covered the election beat on my college newspaper, not music. Here we are again with more songs I liked that were released in 2019.

“Picky Picky” by Weki Meki

I liked “Picky Picky” because it a fun comeback to watch and the song was bright, bouncy and catchy. “I’m so picky, picky, picky.” Plus, I actively kept up my resolution to catch as many girl group comebacks as possible.

That’s not the point, the song was so fun. Sadly, I am not that familiar with Weki Meki as a group but I hope they get more exposure and recognition going into 2020.

“fmu” by Brooke Candy feat. Rico Nasty

Brooke Candy is another artist whom fans have waited on for an album project to be released. A little background, Brooke Candy (yes, it’s her actual name), is a Jewish pansexual rapper who grew up in California. Her family kicked her out of their home after coming out andshe became a stripper.

2012-2013 she went viral for her appearance in Grimes’ music video for “Genesis”. She began releasing her own music like “Das Me,” “Everybody Does”, and “I Wanna Fuck Right Now.” She signed with record label RCA, and released Opulence – EP, various singles and toured with Lizzo in 2017.

After that point she felt it was best for her work to become an independent artist and a while later, Sexorcism her first full album dropped. I’ll admit I was a little put off or unsure of how to receive Brooke’s art when I first watched “Das Me” and her early songs. Year went by and in college I was more open to her music.

Now the song, “fmu” became an instant favorite. I like the full album, but “fmu” grabbed me first as a main single. The concept for the music video was fun and visually pleasing. Who knew dancing with a lesbian motorcycle gang in Oregon would be such a fun road trip? Honestly. The video was great and the song is banging, especially at Rico Nasty’s verse.

“Fancy” by Twice

Now for people who are unfamiliar with k-pop, Twice is probably one of the first girl groups you’ll hear name-dropped. They’re arguably the highest selling girl group at the moment and for good reason. All nine members are just so immensely talented, sweet people. It’s been wild watching them debut and seeing them grow into a k-pop super group.

“Fancy” is one of the catchiest, funnest songs of the year. The choreography is visually striking and fun to dance to. The music video is so colorful and there’s such a busy, kind of hard choreography to it that’s just fun to watch. I like the concept. I like that it didn’t specify if the person singing it was singing to a boy or girl, which groups are moving towards more. The song was simply an I-love-you kind of song but it was bouncy and fun.

I could listen to “Fancy” everyday and I think I did at one point. Okay, one more group.

“Pinky Star (Run)” by GWSN

I wanted to mention this rookie girl group for a moment, GWSN (Girls in the Park). YouTuber Form of Therapy explained this best when he said that he loves deep house music, loves k-pop, but if you combine the two of them, you have my body and soul. That’s what made me fall in love with GWSN.

“Pinky Star (Run)” by GWSN should be considered one of the best k-pop songs of the year if you were considering a list for 2019. It’s catchy, fast-paced and adorable.

The music video has a different approach to camera angles — fast zooms in and out on the group as they perform. It was like watching a 2-D picture book or a click-through game with a story. Not to mention the choreography is fierce. GWSN is synonymous with synchronicity and the group is barely a year old.

I hope they get more attention. Since I’ve heard their music and watch them perform, more people need to see them in their element.

The k-pop kind of took over this post. I promise to show more variety in the next post, but I listen to mostly k-pop and some pop music. Thank you for reading this installment of Songs that Defined 2019.

I’m having a lot of fun making these. And I there’s more to come. Hell, there might be more parts. I feel like I’m not giving the most definitive selection of songs but there’s only so much I can do at 1 a.m.

Anyways have a great night!
