One elusive thing that keeps me up at night, is wondering what the hell am I wanting to know about?
I’ve always been a bookworm since childhood, but I think now I want to understand and know about history, economics, and human nature now than in the past.
When the President Cheeto ordered the assassination of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, I got curious about the history of U.S.-Iran relations. That made me curious about the other times the U.S. have staged coups, overthrown other countries’ governments, waged war against them — arguably imperialism from the U.S.
I read that the U.S. has the most military bases all over the world, and I wondered why would we need to have a military presence in each part of the world?
Take things a step further, I purchased Angry Black Girl by Elexus Jionde, content curator for Intelexual Media to satiate a hunger for the history, economics, and philosophy behind why the world around me is shaped the way it is. Jionde’s book contains essays regarding the desensitization of police brutality towards African-Americans, the conservative influence on the American education system, white privilege, the fetishization of black bodies, and more.
It’s through her content and other online content creators on social media, I encountered more information about history, racism, sexism, and homophobia than my public school education. This subsequently made me want to know more about social issues and American history.
America has a diverse population and history. Why wasn’t that always reflected in the history provided in public schools?
Who decides what’s include in history textbooks and why? What’s omitted and what’s overemphasized? Who became lost to history?
When I observe the zeitgeist of my country, I wonder what led to a collapse of institutions created to help us operate as a democracy? Was the U.S. a democracy in the first place? What more should I know? What could I do?
I plan to research more about topics I not informed about and make an essay-posts about.
Good night!
