I just want to talk about something. 2025 just started.
And already, the U.S. has experienced — the Bourbon Street Massacres, former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral & now Southern California has several wildfires raging in their area. And the east coast is snowing.
What’s happening in California is awful. I think the residents — rich, famous, poor, unknown, immigrant, indigenous, black, white, — did not deserve to have their homes burning down. People have become homeless overnight. Years of work to build their lives are gone in an instant. It’s awful.
And I don’t like how people online are saying it’s karma for the genocide in Gaza. That’s a nasty thing to say. Both the wildfires and Cali and the martyring & starvation of Palestinians in Gaza are more to do with colonization and capitalism than the concept of karma.
There’s a tiktok video making rounds about why California was so prone to wildfires. It has to do with billionaires Stewart & Linda Resnick. In the video user Cody Jacob alleges the Resnicks own 60% of the water in California. The Resnicks own the Wonderful Company which includes these famous companies: “ POM Wonderful, FIJI Water, and Wonderful Pistachios and Almonds.” The couple with their farms & businesses use more water than all of the residents in California combined.
Meanwhile Isnotreal has access to most of the water in occupied Palestine. It’s illegal for Palestinians to collect rainwater. There’s no clean, potable water sources in Gaza. Many have to drink the contaminated water or find ingenious ways to filter it.
Yeah, capitalism and colonization is driving the world to catch fire and freeze.
Also Anita Bryant, singer and anti-gay activist has passed away at 84. She’s known for orange juice commercials and geting pied in the face for being anti-gay. Contrapoints made a video essay about J.K. Rowling that includes a segment about Anita. It’s pretty good. Anita’s interaction with the GLBT community led to this beautiful slogan, mocking her orange juice commercials:
Oddly enough I felt pretty optimistic about 2025 in my personal life. Arguably the worst year was behind me. I’ve got a fresh start and I can do anything I want.
2025 is a 9 Year, according to the astrology girlies. A year of change, endings, upheavals. And I believe it. I’ve got nothing else except this cramp feeling that something in my life has to change or I’ll start breaking things.
Initial 2025 events aside, I believe that we’re on some trajectory for change. And I doubt it’ll be pretty or pleasant, but necessary.
Hopefully in 2025, we’ll see more class consciousness as Americans recognize it’s really the ruling class versus working class/regular people. We’ll see more backlash and pressure to end the genocide in Gaza. More community, friendships, mutual aid, gathering. Also more bops. I don’t know, I’m not a prophet.
